Change Careers Now With Electrical Installation Courses

We wouldn't be able to function in today's world without electricity. In Britain and around the world we rely heavily on the expertise of electrical contractors. Electrical certifications can lead to a wide variety of jobs, depending on the individual's training and experience.

In 2009, over six hundred thousand people were employed in one sector or another of the UK's electrical industry. If you've thought about moving into electrical work, now is a great time to gain your skills and qualifications.

What's The Work Like?

People often question whether they'd be any good in this role. If you're a practical, reasoning sort of person and are good with your hands you'll be off to a fine start. You need to be methodical, and have an eye for detail - it's essential that electricians follow safety procedures to the letter! As a good deal of your work will be unaccompanied, you need to be happy to work on your own. You'll also need to have perfect colour vision and to be physically fit, as some of the work is quite strenuous. Finally if you're planning to work for yourself you'll need plenty of initiative and self-motivation.

Control Your Own Future

A lot of people choose to train for an electrical career so that they can set up in business for themselves. In fact the majority of those who have re-trained either become contract workers or self-employed. And there appears to be an on-going healthy demand for electrical contractors in private housing, so it can work very well. There are people who train to do part time electrical work when their existing work is a bit light. Finally some just want to be able to carry out electrical work in their own homes.

In common with all the trades, good electricians get a lot of their work through word of mouth recommendations from satisfied customers. Be sure that you're pleasant and courteous whenever you're in someone else's home - apart from being the right thing to do, it could bring in a lot more work!

Some electricians employed by big companies work shifts, but most work a regular eight hour day during the week. And according to SalaryTrack, last year the average employed electrical worker earned between 24K and 29K a year. In contrast, domestic electrical contractors working for themselves should earn a good deal more, but they'll also have to put in more flexible hours. They must think about their expenses though when quoting for jobs.

Where Should I Start?

In the UK, look primarily for C&G (City & Guilds) and EAL (EMTA Awards Ltd) training. In addition, teenagers doing C&G exams at technical colleges will find working assignments to complete their more practical NVQ's. This typically will take three to four years. Re-trainers over the age of about 25 mostly study shorter courses part time, much of it at home. They usually target their skills for domestic work, which means NVQs are not needed. Private electrical training companies can get students through their courses and on their way in a matter of months. Overall students are less qualified, but they will have a good grounding in the skills needed for domestic work, and their certifications will be legally acceptable.

Domestic Installer Courses

Although course contents will vary slightly, every level 2 EAL Domestic Installer Course will follow a proven track. You'll be primed to pass Part P, so that all the work you do will conform to legal requirements.

Your training will also enable you to understand and meet the standards of the IEE wiring regulations. There are a number of other C&G certificates you might go for, to widen the range of work you can do.
